Distance education is a notion which is used to refer to a diversity of educational programs and courses, which include courses that don’t have accreditation (courses of staff development) and those that have (higher educational programs). Distance education provides communication between teacher and students, between students as it happens in full-time attendance. In order to make such interaction possible and efficient, many tools, such as interactive software, Internet, e-mail, telephone, fax, post, are used. Distance education becomes extremely popular due to its convenience and flexibility. It eliminates the main barrier that prevents professionals and businessmen from continuing education as they don’t have to attend lessons according to some schedule. Consumers of distance programs can choose appropriate time, speed, place of the lessons according to their demands.
Tuition by correspondence was one of the earliest forms of distance education in the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the twentieth century. With the advent of radio and television the experiments involving development of new courses using new methods began. One-way format of information exchange was a restricting factor of the early distance courses, as a consequence, the interaction of students and tutors was not enough. In the 80s of the twentieth century the development of technologies in the field of television and broadcasting systems allowed big corporations and military departments to use satellite and wired transmission of data as an efficient method of personnel teaching. Last decade gave an impetus to distance education due to development of PCs and Internet as it became more accessible for individuals and corporations.
Nowadays every person can get education using Internet courses and possibility of global interaction. Need for studying caused by need for professional growth and career perspectives helps in promotion of distance courses. In order to reach success in modern economics, everyone needs to improve skills and knowledge constantly. It is evident that web-based interaction systems, innovations and new technologies, virtual lessons will play an important role in satisfaction of demands in constant education.
Distance learning is defined as educational process in which the major part of teaching is performed by a teacher (or a group of teachers), situated far from student(s) in distance and time.
