Professional development of teachersof Linguistics Faculty ESP Department #2
The problem of professional development of teachers at the resent stage of the development of higher education has special importance. Nowadays we discuss the continuous professional learning which is compulsory in our country. The teachers of our department choose different ways of professional development. One of them is training in one of the higher educational establishments. Over the reporting period teachers of our department trained at the Dragomanov NPU, National Aviation University, Economics and Law University "КROК", National Technical University of Ukraine "Kyiv Polytechnic Institute", Detroit University in Germany. Another way to professional development is training courses. 23 teachers took courses of training in the Center of Distance Education “KPI” in such directions as: "Introduction to Distance Education”, “Computer Testing”, “Teacher’s computer competence”, "Creation of a Distance Course", "IT-technology for Scientific and technical translation”. But there are other opportunities for professional development of teachers of foreign languages. Libraries, resource centers, a variety of periodicals, membership in national and international associations of teachers of foreign languages, using modern information technologies create opportunities for continuous learning.
In this context, special attention should be paid to its unique comprehensive approach, the level of quality and diversity of English language programs that are supported by the Regional Office of English Language Department of Public Affairs of US Embassy. These programs include the following four main programs:1) The English Language Fellow exchange program; 2) TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) – Ukraine; 3) FORUM Magazine; 4) The English Teaching Resource Centre.
TESOL – Ukraine program. This organization is a branch of the international professional association of teachers of English as a Foreign Language "TESOL International"."TESOL - Ukraine" was established in Ukraine in 1995 to promote professional development of teachers of English.Several teachers of our department are members of this organization and actively participate in its seminars and conferences. In particular, at the last XII TESOL - Ukraine conference "Humanistic and Pragmatic TEFL", which was held on 21-22 April 2007 in Kyiv ouy teachers Leonova OM, Synekop O.S., Yarmolynko O.A., Shanina L.M., Dubinina O.C., Nikitina N.S., Kozachuhna O.V., Medkova O.M., Lytovchenko I.M. participated in the organizational work and in thebreakup group ESP (English for Specific Purposes) with the presentations of the reports.Another significant contribution was made by our teachers to another event held within the same program in Ukraine, namely in the TESOL symposium on "English Language Assessment", which was held in the Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University.
Another program of the Public Affairs of the US Embassy is FORUM Magazine, an international journal for English teachers, published by U.S. State Department and distributed in 100 countries. It contains articles written by English teachers for their colleagues around the world. Teachers - TESOL members of our department receive this magazine, along with membership in TESOL - Ukraine. Also we can read it in American Resource Center for English teachers. This publication is extremely important for the professional development of every teacher because it includes articles that reflect the latest trends in the theory and practice of teaching English.
The next program is of particular importance, The English Teaching Resource Centre. This is a resource center for English teachers at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, which is supported by the Public Affairs Section of U.S. Embassy in Ukraine. This multi-purpose educational center combines the functions of the library, reading room and seminar rooms. It contains a large fund textbooks, technical, belletristic literature, background materials, audio and video recordings, which are available for free for out teachers who are its members. Also weekly seminars are held weekly for teachers of English, that are performed due to the support of English Language Fellow Program and the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine.
The English Language Fellow exchange program provide teachers of Ukrainian educational institutions with the opportunity to improve their methodological level, studying in the U.S. qualified trainers who hold seminars in American methodological resource center for teachers of English (The English Teaching Resource Centre) in at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
It is difficult to overestimate the role of these seminars for professional growth for both our young and experienced teachers who regularly take part in their work. Over the reporting period, teachers Linguistics Faculty ESP Department #2 participated in:
• cycles of teaching workshops on "How to Teach Business Communication", where the basic methods of teaching students basic business communication were studied.
• cycles of teaching workshops on "How to Teach Business Writing", which examined the methods by which you can integrate business writing in the curriculum.
• A series of seminars "Publishing and Presenting in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)", dedicated to writing articles for publication and making an effective presentations for professional conferences.
Besides seminar courses listed above, I would list the weekly seminars in which our teachers participated during the reporting period. These seminars were devoted to themes, problems and techniques that are most actual today.
