Professional Development Program for university teachers of English “Teaching in a Time of Crisis: Innovative Tools, Strategies, and Approaches to Improving English Learning for Ukrainians”
Kraków, July 2-7, 2023
TESOL-Ukraine Secretary Oksana Chugai, an Associate Professor of the Department of English for Engineering № 2 at the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, attended the TESOL Ukraine Institute in Kraków aimed to equip Ukrainian university teachers with stress-free teaching tips for online and blended contexts, focusing on theoretical knowledge and practical skills in teaching methodology during crisis times.
The TESOL Ukraine Institute consisted of training sessions across four essential blocks of online and blended education:
- Teaching Methodology
- Designing Online or Blended Courses
- Systemic-Functional Linguistics
- Social Emotional Learning
As a result, the participants got understanding of teaching methodology applied in online and blended education, increased awareness of principal issues in designing online or blended courses, gained more confidence in applying Systemic-Functional Linguistics (SFL) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) principles. However, it is the first stage of the whole project. The participants are expected to develop skills in designing their own online or blended courses and conduct successful assessment of project presentations at the discussion panels and publication of the projects on the Canvas LMS platform in September-November 2023. Eventually, the participants who design and present their online courses, will be awarded the certificates of completion.
Needless to say that friendly and supportive atmosphere fostered by the TESOL Ukraine community, enhanced university teachers’ collaboration and communication skills while providing them with cultural experiences in Kraków. Besides learning from the presenters, the participants of the TESOL Ukraine Institute learned from each other and networked with teachers of English from various regions of Ukraine, which will be beneficial for their educational institutions and students as well.
The TESOL Ukraine Institute is partially sponsored by TESOL Ukraine, the Regional English Language Office at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine, and the English Language Alumni Program.
