The EmpowerED project. First results

Professors of the Faculty of Linguistics Iryna Simkova and Yuliana Lavrysh, in cooperation with colleagues from the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), USA, continue to work on the project “EmpowerED: improving the teaching of English for strengthening the educational environment sustainability in Ukraine.”
The goal of this project is to improve the quality of English language teaching in Ukrainian schools and universities, as well as to support the creation of a favourable and sustainable educational environment that can better respond to today’s challenges.

During the past academic year, comprehensive training was conducted for secondary school teachers of Ukraine. A special emphasis was made on the implementation of teaching strategies that take into account students’ traumatic experiences related to war events and other difficult life circumstances. As part of this training, teachers gained knowledge and skills to create a safe and supportive learning space for children affected by conflicts.

In addition to theoretical foundations, the project team helped teachers develop lesson plans that meet the requirements of modern inclusive teaching, taking into account the specifics of working with students who have experienced traumatic events. Such work is aimed at the incasement of the students’ psychological and emotional stability, which, in turn,
promotes more effective learning and harmonious development in the conditions of modern educational reality.
