The ‘English for Science’ student research club was established in 2020 at the Department of English for Engineering No. 2 (Head of the Department, Professor Yu. E. Lavrysh) of the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.”
The ‘English for Science’ club is a voluntary association of KPI students united by a common interest in scientific activities related to English for specific and professional purposes. Students from different faculties and academic levels, including first-year students, are welcome to participate in the club’s activities.
The aims and objectives of the club are to deepen students’ knowledge and develop their skills in academic, scientific, and professional English through work with specialised and scientific materials, relevant interdisciplinary topics, and contemporary issues in science and technology; to develop skills in working with academic sources, terminology, dictionaries, and glossaries; to improve academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills; to foster critical and creative thinking and the ability to analyse, evaluate, and discuss information in an informed and well-argued manner; to develop skills in preparing and presenting academic and scientific materials, delivering presentations and public speeches, and participating in discussions; to familiarise students with the principles of academic integrity and the norms of academic communication; to engage students in independent research, including the preparation and presentation of their own projects and research findings; to create opportunities for the exchange of knowledge, experience, and ideas among students and teachers, as well as for interdisciplinary and international academic interaction; to support students in preparing for participation in conferences, seminars, competitions, and other forms of professional and academic communication; to promote science and academic communication in a foreign language among students; and to contribute to improving the quality of student research and developing students’ readiness for further independent academic and professional activities.
Every month, we meet in a virtual meeting room (Zoom) to discuss current scientific topics. All KPI students are welcome to join us.
