Professional Development of Ukrainian ESL Teachers During Wartime

February 24-25, Lviv

Oksana CHUGAI
Associate Professor at the Department of English for Engineering № 2
National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”

There are few opportunities for ESL teachers to participate in face-to-face training courses in Ukraine. Frequent air alerts, technical problems, and relocation of participants and presenters are just some of the difficulties. However, TESOL-Ukraine and Lexical Lab proved it to be possible. About 200 teachers of English from all over Ukraine participated in the two-day training course “An Introduction in Teaching Lexically” led by Hugh Dellar, a prominent teacher trainer, textbook writer and language expert from Great Britain.

The topics covered on Day 1:
Beliefs about language and learning;
Teaching vocabulary lexically;
Getting more from course book exercises;
Teaching listening lexically.

The topics covered on Day 2:
Teaching grammar lexically;
Getting more from course book exercises (Grammar);
Taking revision and recycling seriously.

Besides actively listening to the presenter, participants, teachers of English from all over Ukraine, were engaged in discussions and group work, they asked questions and shared their expertise with others. It was a great educational event, emotional and symbolic, as it started with a minute of silence in honor to those who have fallen defending Ukraine. Hugh Dellar, thank you for supporting Ukrainian educators!

Part of the training funds was spent on the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
