EMPOWERED: IMPROVING ENGLISH TEACHING
FOR STRENGTHENING THE EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT SUSTAINABILITY IN UKRAINE

We are pleased to announce that the project EmpowerED: Enhancing English Education for Resilient Communities in Ukraine, which was submitted by the Department of the АМГС 3 and the Department of the АМТС 2 in partnership with the University of North Carolina Wilmington (USA) within the framework of the US Department of State program ‘Improving English Language Education in Ukrainian Schools” received funding.

The project is aimed at strengthening the sustainability of the educational environment in secondary schools of the Kyiv region in Ukraine.
The National Technical University of Ukraine “Ihor Sikorskyi Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” (Ukraine) in partnership with the University of North Carolina Wilmington (USA) with the support of the US State Department in Ukraine invites you to take the EmpowerED training course in order to strengthen the sustainability of education in Ukraine. During training, teachers will be able to improve their skills and abilities of blended learning, gain knowledge about the integration of content and language, as well as master of teaching students with traumatic experience.
The program is funded by the US State Department and implemented by the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) in partnership with the National Technical University of Ukraine “Ihor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”.

General goals of the course:
– To familiarize Ukrainian high school English teachers with content and language integrated learning methodology (CLIL) with an emphasis on STEM.
– To improve the implementation of blended learning models.
– To train Ukrainian high school teachers to implement teaching strategies taking into account the students’ traumatic experiences and create appropriate lesson plans.
– To provide participants with practical knowledge on creating lesson plans and assessments according to the students’ needs.

Dates:
January-April 2024: online training.

Participants complete independent modules and attend seminars with trainers on weekends and/or after hours.

May-June 2024: development of plans for the implementation of the acquired experience.

Participants develop their plans for the distribution of best practices, adapted to their local learning context.

July-August 2024: providing feedback.

Trainers provide feedback on participants’ lesson plans.

September-December 2024: implementation of lesson plans.

Participants begin to implement their plans and share lessons learned during the training, with other teachers in their schools.

January 2025: international scientific and practical conference “EmpowerED. Enhancing English Education for Resilient Communities in Ukraine”. Issuance of certificates (108 hours).

The international scientific and practical conference will be held on the basis of National Technical University of Ukraine “Ihor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” and will last three days.
During the conference, participants will be able to share their successes with other participants.

Requirements for candidates:

To be eligible for the EmpowerED program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • To be a citizen and permanently reside in Ukraine.
  • To be a teacher of English as a foreign language at the secondary school in Kyiv or the Kyiv region.
  • Work at school, which has been affected by war or teaches a significant number of internally displaced students.
  • Have spoken and written English at level B2 or higher.
  • Be able to start the course in January 2024 and commit to work actively throughout the course.
  • Have a computer with Internet access.

Course requirements for participants:
The EmpowerED training course program includes:

  • Completion of a 4-month online training course with independent modules and weekly interactive seminars. The required time for online learning is 3-4 hours per week.
  • Development of a plan for sharing best practices in their schools.
  • Exchange of experience with at least 2-3 teachers in their schools.
  • Personal attendance of an international scientific and practical conference at the National Technical University of Ukraine “Ihor Sikorskyi Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” for three days, with the aim of sharing experience and successfully implemented strategies with trainers and other participants.
  • At the end of the course, participants receive certificates of advanced training for 108 hours.

Selection process:
An online application is required to fill out the personal information, confirm eligibility, education level, teaching experience, school information, etc.

Provide a letter of support from the principal of your school (can be in Ukrainian).

If you have taken any standardized English language tests (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, etc.), you are strongly encouraged to upload your results (unofficial results are accepted).

The application deadline is November 29, 2023.

Finalists will be invited to an interview with program organizers in December.
