You are going to take part in the Motivation Letter Contest organized by the Faculty of Linguistics. Сonsider the situation below:

Next year, you are going to take a course-based Master’s degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. You need to write a motivation letter to the University Admissions Committee.

THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES WILL HELP YOU TO WRITE THE MOTIVATION LETTER:

  • In your letter you need to clarify why you are interested in the course you are applying for and how it will impact on your future;
  • Specify what makes you stand out as an exceptional candidate for the course;
  • Articulate your goals, motivations, and values;
  • Make it interesting and reflect your personality;
  • Do not mention the sender and recipient addresses;
  • Use 14-point Times New Roman font, single interval, 2 cm margins;
  • Your letter needs to be no more than 300 words long.

MOTIVATION LETTER REQUIREMENTS

  1. A motivation letter is a formal letter which you need to write if you are applying for university/college admissions, a non-profit, or a volunteering institution.
  2. A motivation letter is used to describe why you are the perfect candidate for a certain position.
  3. There are generally three main parts of a motivation letter:
  4. Introduction: make a short, engaging pitch about yourself and why you are applying. Your introduction should capture your recipient’s attention and encourage them to read on.
  5. Body: describe and highlight your experiences, demonstrate your achievements, skills, and passion for whatever you’re applying for.
  6. Conclusion: summarize your goal(s) and leave a positive final impression. You should also thank your recipient for considering your application and encourage them to contact you if they have any questions.
